Consent Based Social Security Number Verification System

Our newest and most important offering to be used
at the very beginning
of every background check
could save unnecessary expenses.

BackTrack is one of the first background screening companies to offer this service.  The purpose of the Consent Based SSN Verification System (CBSV) is to allow private businesses and government entities to verify that the name and SSN obtained from an applicant matches or does not match the data in Social Security Administration’s (SSA) records.  The information is matched against SSA’s Master File of Social Security Numbers (SSNs), using Social Security number, name, date of birth and gender code (if available).

When can I receive this information?
This information is available pre-hire with proper authorization from your applicant.

What information is obtained?
The Social Security Administration will return one of three responses:

  • Yes – The information submitted for verification matches the Social Security Administration’s records.
  • No – The information submitted for verification does not match the Social Security Administration’s records.
  • Deceased – The name and social security number combination submitted for verification matches the Social Security Administration’s records, but the records indicate that the Number Holder is deceased.

Does this replace the Social Security Number/Name/Address Search that BackTrack currently provides?
No. The SSN/Name/Address Search is a research tool and locator that helps determine where to search for criminal records and is not run through the Social Security Administration’s files.

What do I need to provide to BackTrack to receive this information?

  • The applicant needs to fill out the separate release provided by the Social Security Administration, which may not be altered.  This release must be provided to BackTrack prior to processing the request.
  • First and Last Name of the applicant.
  • Social Security Number of the applicant.

Do I still need to have the applicant complete an I-9 or use the eVerify System post hire?
Yes. The information obtained from the CBSV is not an identity verification that can be used in place of the other forms, which are necessary to verify employment eligibility, and does not satisfy the Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 requirements.
